About Nordic Habitat
Nordic construction knowledge. Portuguese character.
We build beautiful, healthy, efficient and long-lasting homes designed specifically for the Portuguese climate and way of life.
Where we come from
The story behind Nordic Habitat began long before the company had a name.
Two friends met in England and discovered a shared interest in construction, architecture and engineering, as well as a belief that the industry could improve through better materials and smarter technologies.
In 2006, this vision led to their first timber-frame projects in Norway. Over the next two decades, the team gained experience through hundreds of homes and construction projects across Nordic and other European markets.
The principle remained the same: build carefully, solve problems properly and never compromise on elements that will still matter in twenty or thirty years.
Our approach
Built responsibly. Designed to last.
Why Nordic Habitat was created
Nordic Habitat was created to bring more than two decades of construction experience to Portugal. We do not simply place a Nordic house in a Portuguese landscape. We combine principles learned in the Nordic countries with Portuguese architecture, climate and way of life.
What the Nordics taught us
Building in Nordic climates leaves little room for shortcuts. Precision, insulation, airtightness, moisture management and structural integrity are fundamental. Details hidden inside walls, roofs and technical systems determine performance over decades.
Why Portugal
Portugal represents a new chapter. Good design must respond to intense solar exposure, summer overheating, winter comfort, ventilation, humidity, wind and seismic requirements. The objective is not to make Portuguese houses more Nordic, but to build better Portuguese homes.
Our idea of a modern home
A home should be healthy, comfortable throughout the year, economical to operate and designed to remain valuable for decades. We combine timber-frame and CLT structures with efficient envelopes, heating and cooling, solar energy, batteries, smart energy management and EV charging.
Why engineered timber?
CLT, engineered timber and pre-cut structural systems allow high accuracy and predictable performance. Components are digitally designed and manufactured before arriving on site, improving quality while reducing material use, waste and on-site operations.
Why timber construction is faster
While foundations and site preparation progress in Portugal, the timber structure can be prepared in parallel. CLT panels and pre-cut elements are assembled rapidly, introduce less moisture and allow technical installations and finishes to begin earlier.
Is timber suitable for Portugal?
Absolutely—provided the home is designed for Portugal. Design must address solar exposure, shading, ventilation, humidity, winter comfort, wind loads and seismic requirements. Fire resistance, acoustics and durability must be integrated from the beginning.
Durability and fire performance
A timber structure that is correctly designed, detailed and protected from moisture can last for generations. Modern engineered timber structures can also be designed for defined fire-resistance levels as part of a complete safety strategy.
The right material in the right place
A high-performance home rarely depends on one material. Timber may be ideal for the main structure, while reinforced concrete remains suitable for foundations and retaining walls. Steel, glass and stone also have roles where they provide real value.
What sustainability means to us
A responsible home should use less energy, provide a healthy indoor environment and, where practical, produce and manage its own resources. We begin with orientation, shading, insulation, airtightness, glazing and passive performance, then use efficient technology for the remaining demand.
Home and energy
Solar panels, battery storage, smart EV charging and efficient heat pumps can work together with the building envelope to reduce costs and provide year-round comfort.
“The house should still feel right in 30 years.”
Built responsibly. Designed to last. Made for Portugal.
